Today we honor Nikole Hannah-Jones, creator of the The 1619 Project, a long-form journalism project launched in 2019 to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the beginning of American slavery.

Hannah-Jones was awarded the 2020 Pulitzer Prize for Commentary for her introductory essay to the project. She is also a reporter for The New York Times Magazine, where she covers racial injustice.

It’s Black History Month, and we’re very excited to use our platform to spotlight the many contributions from people of color, ranging from creators to politicians to sports figures to social justice advocates and more. This month, keep an eye on GALE as we curate stories and highlight the changemakers who are pushing boundaries and making history happen as we speak.
